Larry and I came to Cortland at about the same time, and I felt we had parallel careers, he in the Philosophy Department, I in English. We were always friendly, but I really got to know Larry when we both became active in UUP. The Cortland chapter had many fine leaders in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s (I think especially of Jo, Henry, and Frank) but no one at Cortland was more dedicated to social justice, the welfare of the members, and the good of the college, SUNY, and public higher education than Larry. When I retired and moved from Cortland I always looked forward to seeing him at union meetings in Albany. When HE retired, I missed those opportunities to catch up on events and hear his ideas about the interests we shared. It was a privilege to know Larry, as a colleague, but especially as a thoughtful, thought-full, and generous person. --Del Janik Fellow former Cortland chapter president Professor of English Emeritus
